It's a few very basic ideas that may open up a world of possibilities when it comes to the newly released Kastelan Robots.
It got me thinking!
Premise 1: The Kastelan is over 10,000 years old, some say it goes back to the days of the Great Crusade - but on what side?
You could imagine that the far flung human colonies who lost contact with Terra may have had them in their forces, would these colonies field them against these Imperial invaders?
More so, the colonies may not have had a Dark Age where knowledge was lost and may have been able to field them to their full potential!
You could probably say that during the Great Crusade, the Imperium may be as likely to field these robots as come into conflict with them.
Surely any God-King would want them in his armoury, and when the Space Marines came knocking, the invaders may find themselves on the receiving end of potentially well maintained and correctly controlled Kastelans. Kastelans vs. Imperials? There's a face off!!
It certainly blows open modelling options and even force structures in both the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy eras. Can you now justify Kastelans in your Legion's livery or could you now field a force that repelled Imperial incursion in the Great Crusade, or even after!
Premise 2: The Kastelan was not originally controlled by the Adeptus Mechanicus! They have "repurposed" it like they repurpose lots of technology no one knows how to use anymore for continued use in the 40K universe. They were the ones to put the Data Smith in charge to control it the only way they knew how.
So who originally controlled it and who fielded it?
Was it fielded by the Space Marine Legions? The Castellax was fielded by the Iron Warriors (taking an important part in hunting Loyalists post-massacre) and other Legions, so why not the Kastelan?
If it was used in the Legions, was a Techmarine in charge of it and why has that knowledge been lost?
If the Adeptus Mechanicus fielded it during the Heresy then it's much older than 10,000 years old and proves Premise 1 could in fact be a possibility.
So - what do you think?
I love the modelling options that Premise 1 poses. A Kastelan in the honour guard of a God-king? Kastelans in Space marine Legions? Certainly more interesting than red... unless you field Blood Angels!
