You know when you've been toiling away on a model and you're just sooo close that you just have to share it? Well welcome to this update... As I said previously, the Vindicator is one of my favourite Astartes tanks so I just HAD to add a Crusade-era one to my War Hounds Legion force (which now looks quite imposing with two tanks)! This Vindicator isn't a straight paint job, there was a bit of conversion work to add foot and hand rails in a salute to the original Rhino kit and a bit of extra stowage top side. Got to tell you, the Forge World kit is a journey... + + More After The Jump + + |
What we do know is they used blue and white (reversed World Eaters) and the War Hound symbols was as important as the title of the XIIth Legion - the War Hound tag being given to them by the Emperor himself.

The War Hound is always displayed on white, so I knew the sides of the Vindicator would have some element of white as I really wanted a prominent hound! The hound was traced on and then painted on by hand in Khorne Red which is an exact match for the smaller Forge World decals... thankfully.
Traditionally the War Hound would have been reversed to keep it facing forward, but it looked so different that leaving it facing the right direction was more important.
The red on the front plow is layered and then washed and layered again to make it look dirty but also stand out on the dark metal. Equally the tracks have some bronze on them to give them a different look.
I wanted it to reflect the look of the symbols on the front of the War Hound Sicaran as they worked well.
You can just see here that the lens on the Bolter is the same colour as the War Hounds helmet visors.
My War Hounds use a lot of dark metal and bronze combined, so that needed to be on the Vindicator too.

There's still some paint to be neatened up and maybe some super detailing (trying to avoid skulls) with maybe a scroll or two, a banner and maybe a crew...
From what I know this is the only War Hounds Vindicator out there, so hope it inspires a few of the War Hounds people to give it a go.
The Forge World kit is bloody fiddly with a lot of detail, but I'm sure if you're a better painter than I it will pay off in the end product. I prefer the Games Workshop one in plastic personally as the plastic takes the shading better than the resin edges of the Forge World version.
