The last time we left Warhammer Visons was back in Issue #1 - that seems like a long time ago, doesn't it?
At the time I was totally impressed with Warhammer Visions and the potential it held, but Issue #5 of White Dwarf saw a bit of a change - with the content element going back into the White Dwarf.
It's not really fair to complain about that considering how much content was in the last few White Dwarfs, but it leaves Warhammer Visons as only a monthly picture book... and that doesn't seem like something all that sustainable, especially considering the amount of recycled material in Issue #2 of Warhammer Visions..
And this picture pretty much encapsulated what you do get - 60+ pages of Dwarves. But not just any Dwarves, many of the same pictures you've seen before in White Dwarf #1 - 3.
In fact so much so, that the layout is effectively White Dwarf without the writing!
This is very disappointing - and often it's the same miniatures from different angles or vs other foes... YAWN!
The feature on the Rune Lord and other character models are direct lifts from White Dwarf and the GW website - did they run out of time to make this issue?
If you have the first 3 White Dwarfs - you do not even need to glance at the first 60 pages of this issue. Sure there are some great scenes, but it's pretty much same-old same-old. Some poor bastard has been painting a Hell of a lot of Dwarves I have to tell you, because there are some large armies on display - all in very similar colour schemes unfortunately!
Where are the new schemes? There is WAY too much replication! Not smart, GW.
I had expected more in the way of their WIP section. The old White Dwarf back in the day was great at kit-bashes, but this seems a half-hearted effort.
The selection for the Golden Demon section is lacklustre to be honest.
I'm a big fan of Tyler Mengel and his Astral Claws - the paint jobs are just beautifully done - but the shots of his Golden Demon entry and in fact all the photography in this section is really not great!
I'm no photographer - but no one is buying my pictures, so they really need to do better.
So Issue #2 of Warhammer Visions - on a scale of 1 (being crap) to 10 (being awesome) - I give this a 5.
Honestly, as a fan of the first issue and genuinely excited about this month's, I am left speechless with how mediocre this is.
Maybe with White Dwarf taking some of the good bits now, Warhammer Visions is left without a place to fill?
Recycling images from White Dwarf is not going to win you fans.
Recycling Paint Splatter articles is also not going to win you fans.
I am now left wondering if Warhammer Visions will last.
From what I can see it's catering to a Japanese market that is used to these kinds of picture books - but will one market carry this through?
So what do you think of this issue - am I being unfair?
