The Imperial Guard, more formerly known as the Astra Militarum are the backbone of the Imperium in Warhammer 40k. Teeming millions (or even billions) of men, women and yes, various forms of 'abhumans', who keep the Imperium safe, or fight vicious wars to expand her hunger for resources. From the very beginning of Warhammer 40K - a universe we more associate with Space Marines - there have been these humans, and this weekend we have the pre-orders up for their brand new Codex, Codex: Astra Militarum. The Codex itself comes in Spit Polish Standard Edition or For Emperor and the Imperium Collector's Edition. The miniatures release however, concentrates on one specific type of Guard unit, and that's the Death Korps of Krieg - trench fighters, engineers, masters of massed artillery, and they are led here by Lord Marshal Dreir on his mount which is clearly NOT a horse! Part alien beat of burden, part machine, part twisted fever dream My Little Pony, this has so much going on all at once! The ubiquitous command arm of the Death Korp is filled by the Krieg Command Squad, which really has a tonne of character! The bulk of the Death Korp of Krieg is obviously infantry and the Death Korps of Krieg are your grunts. It's unclear from the description if this is just the Kill Team set repackaged or if this is just the same poses but we lose all the specialist options, either way it's a very nice kit and great fun to paint. By the price point we would assume that we lose the extras! Now speaking of specialists, here's some right now - the Krieg Combat Engineers. World War 1 fans, please notice their trench fighter armour and how ubiquitous these are going to become in Trench Crusade. Just when you thought one twisted My Little Pony wasn't enough, here's some more. Straight from the Krieg Army Box, it's the Death Riders, who much closer resemble the sort of mounted Guard that most people think of, ideally quickly replacing the Rough Riders kit, which though cool, have dumb hats. These too are mounted on alien mounts, and with that in mind, here's hoping we see some mounted on Seraphon soon!! Krieg are all about power, and diving into their World War 1-inspired roots, let's talk big guns. A fantastic kit, the new Krieg Heavy Weapons Squad looks amazing. Giving you three units these can be built as either three of the same or varinats of the lascannon, heavy flamer, or a twin heavy stubbers. Guns, big guns, are also here and this kit is a beauty - the Artillery Team! Look at that big beautiful baby... drool!!! This can be built as either a heavy mortar, siege cannon, heavy quad launcher, or as a multiple rocket launcher. I mean how beautiful is this thing? Brings a tear to the eye! The new Codex means a new Combat Patrol: Astra Militarum with a very interesting assortment of troops - a Cadian Command Squad, ten Kasrkin and ten Attilan Rough Riders. Doesn't quite feel like cohesive unit, but it's a cross section of the range. As with the Combat Patrol we have the new Datasheet Cards: Astra Militarum and Astra Militarum Dice.
Also in Warhammer 40k, we have the next expansion, which comes in two editions; Crusade: Nachmund Gauntlet or Crusade: Nachmund Gauntlet (Collector's Edition). Not much fanfare or even any new minis. Also in 40K we have the delayed release of the Aeldair Wave Serpent/Falcon for Australia, New Zealand and Japan.
In books this week we have a number of Guard themed goodies - two on the glamorous Top Guns of the Astar Militarum. Double Eagle in hardback and Interceptor City also in hardback, plus a paperback focussing on one fo the most important battles in Death Krieg history, the Siege of Vraks. There's also the Special Edition of Outer Dark.
