The Righteous Harbingers were a Space Marine Chapter I came up with maybe about 10 years ago. I had this idea of urban combat specialists with their gear all over them, hunkered down in broken buildings, laying traps and holding back hordes of invaders while brick dust showered them. Pretty simple idea, so I chose two suitably urban colours, with orange as the contrast. This model doesn't have the orange rank insignia as I'm not sure where he fits into my force. I went back to the Righteous Harbingers to update the look. The original style of painting had very muted highlighting which left them looking a bit flat. Look at the 1st RH I did (Power Fist Sergeant) compared to the later Assault and Scout Sergeant. |
With only 5 or so colours on the entire model it's pretty easy to not make it look too busy.
I used Nuln Oil for the joins around the armour plates as it wasn't as stark as traditional black-lining.
The ammo pouch on his leg is done in a warm terracotta/ orange to contrast with the cool grey and white.
The helmet carries gold decorations. The Righteous Harbingers use gold as a sign of honour, so additions to equipment and armour in gold are for valour, sacrifice or meritorious conduct.
The over the top helmet decoration on this guy is obviously for some important deed. He is blinged out!!
Righteous Harbingers all carry a back banner with them (in the Rogue Trader days all Space Marines carried their squad/ company banner in their packs) and there is a real temptation to do a whole squad with them - maybe 1st Company.

I started a write up of the Righteous Harbingers with all their markings and backstory here if you're interested. It's a work in progress, believe me!

Going back and rediscovering these guys was great fun!
Next up I'll be adding some MKIV pieces into the armour mix for some variety.
