Lizardmen are one of THE founding races of fantasy, having an important place all across the Dungeons & Dragons expanded universe (Dragonlance etc) and beyond, in fact even as recently as today with Mantic Games announcing a lizard man race (amongst others) for their new Kings of War expansion, Uncharted Empires. Games Workshop have their own Lizardmen (called that until a recent name change to the Seraphon) and this week's White Dwarf sees them re-emerge from what we thought was their doom during The End Times. Unfortunately, instead of giving some very old and very tired looking miniatures a much-needed revamp, we get the range repackaged! More on that later... Also in this issue we see the release of the individual parts of the Tau Tidewall that was sold out on day of release last week, there's also Armies on Parade, some Tau-themed Paint Splatter, Forge World get a look in and a sneaky tease about next week's Horus Heresy dump! + + More After The Jump + + |
The Lizardmen are back, this time with the snazzy name of Seraphon!
Unfortunately when they returned there was obviously a problem with the space time continuum and the miniature design was flung back to a time long ago when things were pretty naff! Despite desperately needing an update on almost all of their forces, the Seraphon only got a simple repack. Have a look at the Saurus Warriors (below) and yes, retro can be cool, but old hat is crap! Beside a beautiful Carnosaur (I have this model and it's specatcular) and the Bastiliadon are some really tired looking miniatures.
The Saurus Warriors, Temple Guard and Skinks are in such a desperate need of a retooling it's not funny! As someone who would totally collect a Lizardmen army, these have ALWAYS been a deterrent.
The Thunderbeast Host models, especially the Carnosaur, are awesome and great value - saving you $60AUS if you get the set rather than individually.
Having seen this new very bright colour scheme GW are using, I wonder how long it will take to tone that down. It's really quite Tzeentch in its intensity!

I know this sounds a bit odd, but seeing all this Lizardmen stuff in DESPERATE need of an update makes me more and more interested in what Mantic are going to bring out. For the most part it will likely look better!
Frankly this should have either been in last weeks or dumped. This is a much better spot for some Seraphon painting action, especially considering the complexity of some of their schemes.
Verdict
This isn't a bad issue and interesting how they have both Warhammer 40k and Age of Sigmar/ Warhammer divided in the same issue - there's the final parts of the Tau release and then the Seraphon re-releases. Curious there are no new Seraphon releases, you'd think there would be some - at least a character or maybe a Slaan bodyguard for the Mage Priest (now called a Star Master it seems) - but alas. I did see this guy (right) who I haven't seen before though, so maybe there will be something to come. As far as the weekly Paint Pot vs. White Dwarf comparison - there is a lot on the Seraphon, so if that is your thing, then grab it, but there isn't a tonne else. 50/50 for me! |
