The proportions are half way between a Primaris and a normal Marine, so it would fit into the current direction of the minis quite well. Be really interesting to see the conversions that will come out of this mini, as the pose is open to some fun for sure!
Only one pre-order this week, and it's not even a pre-order - it's in the shops now!!! That's right, the reimagining (well actually it's pretty much a straight copy) of Jes Goodwin's 1991 Noise Marine is here. The model itself is very cool, especially if you like a bit of retro stuff. The proportions are half way between a Primaris and a normal Marine, so it would fit into the current direction of the minis quite well. Be really interesting to see the conversions that will come out of this mini, as the pose is open to some fun for sure!

I you're a fan of the more European style of colours that GW are really only just starting to do, then look no further than the excellent Vallejo paint range. They have a tone of them in all kinds of colours, consistencies and themes. Previously, however, Vallejo only had the bottles and the airbrush style... well now spray can users delight because Vallejo have just announced their range will be expanding to include spray cans. The spray range will include 3 Basic colors, 19 Fantasy shades, 5 WWII AFV and 4 WWII Infantry colors. Smartly, they ave also included 2 different nozzles; Skinny Cap especially for fine lines and small details, and Pocket Cap for covering larger surfaces. But it's not just colour... it's also varnishes with - Gloss, Matt and Satin cans also in the range. Finally we can get a good Matt. By the Gods Old and New... I think there's some dust in my eye! his is especially good news for military hobbyists as their military range is very good. As you may know, we tend to take a pretty cynical view of the more recent additions to the Games Workshop universe, but this weekend they held their Vigilus Open Day in the UK and no only did they preview a bunch of new minis - but they frankly they knocked this out of the park! The first sign this was going to be a good day was this guy (right) the classic Noise Marine based on Jes Goodwin's original sculpt - and it's bloody amazing! GW have of course hammed it up with a video (below) but have a look at the details on this guy - that mane of hair, the classic animal prints and platform boots. This is a triumph and we need multiples of them! It wasn't all about this guy though - there's a tonne of good stuff to check out... The Vigilus Campaign, currently making it's way through the 40K Universe is about to add some more heroes - this time we have Magneus Calgar in Primaris armour and a new Black Legion character - Haarken Worldclaimer, a perfect accompanying leader for the current Raptors! There is also a new campaign book, which seems to have a lot of Primaris Chapters (including the Sons of the Phoenix and more) plus the Dark Angels and their Successors. I still think this will bring Abaddon and potentially a Primarch back, but the internet is full of rumours, so our two sense worth isn't really needed! Genestealer Cults has been a massive hit, and now not only have they introduced a throwback mini of the Cult Leader looking over a battle plan, but also light vehicles. If this doesn't somehow also give Imperial Guard more light vehicles to fill the old Rough Rider slot, then that would be a massive shame. Forge World also previewed their massive new Warbringer Nemesis Titan which is basicaly a walking artillery piece with a crew on the upper deck. This is truly a beast and a huge undertaking for anyone wanting to take on this project! Curious this wasn't released in Adeptus Titanicus scale first to see what the mood for it would be like. It does make us wonder how close we are to the Imperator Titan at this rate! It's not all 40K - Age of $igmar also got a look in with their latest demon vs demon boxed set that pits Slaanesh and Khorne against one another. We've already seen some of the new minis, but this final reveal showed us Karanak and a harp-playing Slaaneshi. More details to come for sure! The Legio Ballista forces have been a very slow build - in fact starting back in the Epic days. More recently with the plastic Skitarii units - including the Kastelan - Legio Ballista had more of a flesh out, and not with the advent of Adeptus Titanicus, it's a chance to get some more Titans from the Legio on the battlefield. What's interesting is to compare these new models to the older Epic scale models and see mow much bigger the Titans are! Strangely the vehicles are now to scale because in Epic they certainly weren't! The level of detail on the plastic Adeptus Titanicus kits is excellent, with the Warhound being great fun to build with a brilliant result, but the Reaver is more fiddly - especially the leg armour and was really more of a pain to build than anything! Not in a rush to do more Reavers, but the Warhounds are the gift that keeps on giving. ++ It has not, BTW, missed my attention that every one of these photos is out of focus ++ Painting Monstrous Creatures is not a thing that comes naturally to someone easily distracted by the 'new shiny'. Nor someone lacking discipline - but the Beasts of Chaos Ghorgon was not only a large miniature, but also something I was going to finish before starting anything else - and what a fateful decision that was! You see the Ghorgon is not only large... but PACKED with detail. It's actually an excellent model, beautifully done, with more skulls than an Undead army and more leather straps than a Slaanesh meet and greet. There's also a lot of alternate parts - from hands to forearm armour - so I took that extra armour and gave him knee and shoulder armour to give him a heavier appearance. Haven't seen this done before, but I' sure I'm not the first. The colour of the flesh unites him with the other Beastmen in my force (unit examples below) which is a Celestra Grey base, with a Skavenblight DInge/ Lahmian Medium wash and then progressively lighter Celestra Grey/ Ceramite White highlights. Painting the skin was a pain as I decided to avoid large areas of colour and instead went for a strokes - look closely, it gives texture to something would obviously not be a flat colour. Thought that with the scale of him, the skin needed some sort of texture. The touches of red fabric also unite him with the rest of my force. There is a lot of warm colours on him to contrast with the cool skin colour - the leather, the red fabric, the tongue and then there's touches of cool like the green and purple gems. The leather has had a few comments - this is actually quite simple - Terracotta base, Ratskin Flesh highlights and then a very watered down dark brown wash. It flattens the colours together nicely.
The metals are all rusted with thinned brown paint and some very watery orange in the crevices, but the sharp parts of the blades are clean of rust to show they had been sharpened for war. - Overall I'm very happy with the result and would consider doing another, but after a bit of a rest! The Start Collecting Beast of Chaos is excellent value as it comes with this and some troops. For some extremely odd reason I have been thinking about some of the Specialist units for the War Hounds Legion. Not really sure why - I mean I have enough infantry still to paint, but this entered my mind. Maybe it's because I want the Specialist units to have slightly different markings and I want to explore that. Already the Scimitar pilot has the markings, so why not expand it a bit - thus this Destroyer guy. Now firstly, I'm not convinced the War Hounds would have used Destroyers, in fact they seem like the type of Legion that would shun them, but you never know. I knew right away that I didn't want the ruined armour, but I did want to have some effect on their armour from the specialist weapons - no paint chips, but something. Considering the War Hounds were a very chivalrous if violent Legion, their armour would be clean at least! Here I opted for some Brown washes in the recesses and around bolts to show there had been some wear. The helmet is an Iron Warriors one and I really like the design but it may not fit the Legion. Here you could argue that he looks like a Chaplain, but the thought was the unit would be themed around the idea of death - skulls etc!
Now the Specialist markings I mean are the shoulder pads - notice the blue bars on the side of the markings. This is on both shoulders and will differentiate them from normal units. Possibly the best Bronze shoulder trims I've ever done BTW! Happy with those. There's a bit of neatening up to do on some of the paint, but overall he's done. Ss the Specialist units start to take shape. I doubt I will do anther Destroyer - it was more a fun test. When the new Beasts of Chaos army was announced, one of the very cool things was the Start Collecting Beasts of Chaos set. This had light infantry (Ungor), a heavy infantry unit (Bestigor), a spellcaster (Great Bray-Shaman) and a monster (the Ghorgon/ Cygor combi-kit) - a great start to any army, especially in this era of magic. The Ghorgon/ Cygor combi-kit was cool before, when added into this kit it became amazing value; you effectively get the heavy infantry and spellcaster for free! With Beastmen in the air, the Start Collecting set was ordered and we were really surprised at the kit as a whole. It's sizeable, packed with a tonne of detail - and even on it's own - the $90 price tag is well worth it. The Sylvaneth Spirit of Durthu kit gets a lot of attention for it's level of detail - well this kit is definitely on par with both options, detail and scale. We're going with the four armed Ghorgon model - rule of cool - but definitely considering another one. Now of course the painting may be an epic pain in the arse, so that could change, but for now until it sits gathering dust, revel in the beauty!! - ++ If you follow us on Facebook, you would have seen that after years of disappointment with GW Mail Order in Australia, we decided to try Emerald Hobbies & Collectables & it arrived on the Tuesday after release. Couldn't ask for more. This is not a paid endorsement - just a heads up to Aussie & Kiwi buyers ++ Have you had the chance to have a look at the new Kings of War Vanguard miniatures from Mantic? There's some really awesome sculpts from a variety of races. While you're at it, check out the massive Kings of War Giant! Years ago, when Mantic first started, the plastic wasn't that great - but I hear these days it is very much improved, so I have to say that i'm tempted!
Very exciting news this week - Dreamforge Games have released further details and new shots of their alien race, the Shadokesh. These have been much anticipated and to finally see them is amazing. It seems that Mark, the creator of Dreamforge Games, is planning a small Kickstarter - just one kit at a time so it doesn't get too hectic - and he has a new manufacturer who is not backlogged with other projects like last time. As big fans of Dreamforge - two Leviathan Crusaders and over a dozen boxes of infantry - we are absolutely behind this 100% and really looking forward to learning more about the release of these minis. Dreamforge have also put up some background on the Shadokesh plus if you'd like to catch up on some of their excellent older releases, then they're having a Fathers Day Sale with over 60% off stock. Check out the pics of the Shadokesh below including a great shot of the sprue. This is only two of the five minis expected in the set, but have a look at that awesome ball and socket elbow joint. So cool. It's been a while since a hobby update, but I've been slowly working away on a few things. A new job and life get in the way, but I've added a new character to the War Hounds Legion and started work on an idea for a Stormcast Chamber - not entirely sure why... I'm not entirely sure if this new War Hound is going to be part of the Command Squad or maybe a Captain to go with the Assault units, but this combination came to me early one morning. The torso you may recognise as being Space Wolf, but a few different colours and look - they're hounds!! There's actually been a fair bit of conversion work in this guy. His face needs a bit more work, but overall he's pretty close.
- The Stormcast is from a Chamber I'm calling the Ebony Dawn right now. Really it was s test mini for an idea and also a chance to try pint chipping on painted armour. It['s not perfect but the effect does work. The face, again needs some love. Notice the Chaos Knight pauldrons to replace those ugly Stormcast ones! If you're making an early Horus Heresy or Great Crusade army, then Combi-Volkite is a very fluffy weapon, especially for Veterans or Characters. Forge World have only made one so far and it's on the limited edition Praetor from Warhammer Fest in 2016. It's a pretty ugly model and kind of a big outlay when you'll be needing a few if you want to arm your entire squad. That being said, we think we have a solution! The Combi-Volkite (left) can be kitbashed, almost exactly, with a few of the current range pieces and about 30 minutes of your time. The Combi-Volkite is very fluffy for the XIIth Legion War Hounds as they are a Great Crusade Legion. For them their Veterans would more likely than not to have these in their arsenal. Now on with the simple (and a bit blurry) build... I grabbed a few cheap things off eBay to test if this would work - a Forge World Volkite Charger, a normal current range Bolter and the Combi-Bolter piece from the Space Marine Devastator kit. For all intents and purposes, this is identical to the Forge World Limited Edition version. The fit of the pieces is trial and error but they will go together, so be careful not to lose any bitz and keep the glue off the surfaces. - I've been asked if removing/ replacing the magazine/ strap from the Combi-Bolter is necessary, and for the bitz to fit together, yes it is, BUT you can just as easily just cut the strap off and use that same magazine. ... and there you have it - fluffy Combi-Volkites for your Veterans!
What do you think? It's pretty straight forward and adds a lot of 'choom' to your army for just a few $ Today we have a review from Steven, loyal servant of the Omnissiah and mini buying fiend! In a flurry of excitement and too many Imperial Credits, he leapt on the Eisenhorn model from Games Workshop. Here are his thoughts, displayed to you as a plaintiff cry into the Warp. Black Library hit the big 2-0 this year, and to celebrate, they’ve released some shiny goodies through Games Workshop. They’ve taken one of 40k’s well known characters and have turned him into tabletop form. That’s right ladies and gentlemen, The Emperor himself…no? Ok, is it Ibram Gaunt and his Ghosts? No? Ciaphas Cain? No? Well it can’t be Papa Smurf, he already has two models… Oh right, it’s Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn. Eisenhorn is an Inquistor for the Holy Inquistion who starts of his career as an Amalathian (the Emperor is good and the Warp is evil), but slowly changes his views be Xanthism (impure Inquistors who use the Warp as a tool). If you haven’t read the Eisenhorn books by Dan Abnett, we strongly suggest them as a good read, though ++ PLOT SPOILER ++ don’t get too attached to the side characters (RIP Fischig). Let’s start our review of the redeeming part of the Eisenhorn model... and that’s the box. ++ AS THE EMPEROR'S LIGHT SPREAD THROUGH THE GALAXY DURING THE GREAT CRUSADE, EVIDENCE WAS FOUND THAT EVEN THE WORLD'S MIGHTIEST HEROES HAD FALLEN ++
This was just a fun bit of terrain, very cheap to build. The Captain America head is $10 from the craft section in the toy department at Kmart in Australia. The rest of the base is cork tiles cut down, the grass tufts are from Gamers Grass and the small scatter rocks from the old Games Workshop 40K terrain set - which can now only be found from scale model railway terrain supplies. Nice to have a new piece of terrain to add to the table, especially a fun simple one! Forge World are at it again, this time deleting more from their Horus Heresy range - including the almost the entire MKII Space Marine range and many weapons sets, mainly the older Legion range. Some of the weapon sets make sense, as they now appear in the plastic boxed sets for Horus Heresy - the Tigrus and Phobos Pattern Bolters and Flamers for example - but if you want to build a Heavy Flamer or Missile Launcher-armed Heavy Support Unit, you are going to need to buy a fair few boxes to get enough to arm one squad. Also disappearing are the older pattern Volkite Culverin, and Legion Pattern Rotor Cannons, Las Cannon, Mutli-Meltas and Plasma Cannon sets. Sadly the Cataphractii and Tartaros Terminator sets are also getting the chop, as are the Umbra, Seeker and Ferrox Pattern Bolters. Also of note are the Bolt Pistol sets which also add much needed kit around the waist of your forces.
Now, as we said earlier this week, this is an odd move considering how MKII is currently prominent in the marketing for the New Horus Heresy book, Malevolence. Everyone on the net seems to be an expert on this, and frankly their voice is often wrong and unhelpful. - So lets delve a little deeper: Are Forge World just deleting old stock that doesn't sell? Maybe! Are Forge World deleting stock that is being impacted by recasters? Potentially - that's smart if you want to weed out people who are using recast stuff, but now you have opened a legitimate market for recasters! In terms of business, this is crazy! We have already seen hardened anti-recast bloggers state that this leaves them only one option - and that is to buy product not manufactured by Forge World. The Community itself is now in opposition to the manufacturer which creates a lack of trust and stability AND loyalty. - The other two options these armchair blogging experts aren't even considering ... 1) Could Forge World be changing the resin used in their weapon sets? There is better resin for smaller items and maybe this is where they will start. Neo-Resin is one such material. 2) Could Forge World be moving towards clam-packed plastic weapons sets? Let's hope so! These would be easier, cheaper to mass produce, all on one sprue like the old days AND they could be carried in store by Games Workshop. We have already seen the very successful move to use these EXACT weapons in plastic Horus Heresy sets from Games Workshop as we said above. This latest cull sees SOME duplication deleted between the GW and the Forge World range, so bringing out dedicated heavy weapons sets for Games Workshop to sell in store makes sense - doesn't mean it'll happen, but it just makes sense. - Let us know what you think. Let's open up a dialogue and be constructive. Games Workshop revealed this morning that there would be a new addition to the Warhammer Community site, Warhammer Legends. This will apparently provide a portal to house rules for narrative and open play games so that classic minis from the so-called Old World an be fielded again. Not only will the rules live here, but we'll get a chance to buy them through the standard week-long Made to Order offers. One of the first sets to be offered up, along with some other Dark Elf minis, are the old Dogs of War/ Regiments of Renown Mengil Manhide’s Manflayers. Dogs of War, or Regiments of Renown depending on when you first saw these, were a way to add Mercenary forces to your army. They were generally unaligned but brought units from right across the Warhammer world including Dwarf pirates, Lizardmen Skinks on Cold Ones and a plethora of human units from kingdoms we hadn't heard of. These units could either be built into a large force, or just take a contingent to add to your force. At the time they were pretty expensive, so Gods know how much they will be today, but there were some amazing miniatures in the sets, including a lot done by Alan Perry of the Perry Brothers, who of course now run probably the best historical miniatures company around. Could the re-release of the Mengil Manhide’s Manflayers be the opportunity to also release more of the Dogs of War/ Regiments of Renown sets? Have a look at some of the cool Perry Brothers units below - Braganza's Besiegers, Pizzaro's Lost Legion, Voland's Venators plus Dave Andrews' and Norman Swales' infamous Birdmen of Catrazza . These would be amazing to see again and even cooler to have in your force, even open the door to GW introducing rules for Mercenary units again. Here's hoping! Above images provided by Stuff of Legends - an AMAZING archive of classic gaming mini images.
Well this seems like a very strange coincidence - just days after the Regimental Standard announced that the lasgun very similar to the ones used by the Elysian Drop Troops (and manufactured by House Van Saar) is being withdrawn from active service, Forge World has added the entire range of Elysians to the Last Chance To Buy section of their website.
The announcement in Regimental Standard that the Nihilis Pattern Lasgun is being withdrawn from service is a sneak peak at the next gang in Necromunda, House Van Saar, and how they arm elements of the Imperial Guard - BUT it does seem interesting that we see the Imperial Guard unit with this weapon now being discontinued. It's not the only thing being discontinued, with two Ryza and one Krieg Leman Russ variant also being discontinued. Curiously Forge World have shown other products being discontinued (below). The Leman Russ could be explained in the rumoured new Leman Russ plastic boxed set coming soon, but the Elysians could just be shuffling off this mortal coil, which is a shame for a unit that is unique in looks and role - harking back to the days of jump pack assault units for Imperial Guard. Other items turning up in Last Chance To Buy include the Elysian Venator and some Solar Auxilia items. When we first saw the images of the Namarti Thralls they were pretty exciting - not just for the miniatures they are, but for the possibilities they hold. Then over the weekend, pictures started to emerge on Twitter and Facebook of people who already have the miniatures, and the thing that really stuck out for us is the seeming lack of details on the miniatures. When we first saw the sprues online it was disappointing to see that they're not multi-pose - they have an alternate weapon option, but no head options or posing options. Then the Facebook & Twitter images showed that the level of detail we saw from GW just don't seem to be there - the muscle definition seems to be shallow, the moulded armour isn't defined, such as the fluting on the armour or the intricate designs on the cloth and the Namarti head. As I say, this is gained from a few images online, but it would be disappointing if we were to get push-fit quality miniatures considering how versatile these could become and the price point - which is not cheap! So now you have seen some out of the box images, what do you think?
Having second thoughts like we are? Are the Namarti going from a 'must have' to a "will buy down the track... maybe'? With the announcement of the much-anticipated Codex: Drukhari this morning, there is a new Start Collecting set to go along with it - so as we did with the Necrons - which of these sets is better value Purely in terms of money, the minis in the 2016 set if bought separately would cost you $186 AUD and the new 2018 set if the minis were bought separately would set you back $181 AUD.
The pricing is close, but unlike the Necron forces, these two sets serve a different purpose on the battlefield.. The 2016 set is more tactical - the Raider transport and Kabalite Warriors serve the swift interdiction and ranged warfare with the Reavers (amazing models!) providing speedy assault and an Archon to be all buff and kick some arse . The 2018 set on the other handy is all about assault - Wyches for vicious hand to hand, the Venom for fast light transport and support and the venerable Reavers for zooming across the board and killing things! Then there's the Succubus, an amazing model with some serious speed and killing power. Not to everyone's taste, but not to be sniffed at either. In reality, the Drukhari could have both these boxes existing at the same time - they serve different purposes and certainly don't cannibalize each other apart from the Reavers, and from what GW are saying, the Reavers are getting some love this time around. GW are also saying that the units in the 2018 set "feature a range of units that have been greatly improved" - so maybe this is a showcase set, a set someone can start with an actually win with. Really in essence, unlike our Necron overview, this one is going to have to be inconclusive - with similar savings and the different roles each set specialises in, each set is really dependent on how you play. The 2016 set feels like a core unit builder, while the 2018 feels like a more special forces builder. The 2016 is more ranged while the 2018 is more assault and both have Reavers in support so you won't lose out there. If the 2016 had the option to build a Ravager instead of just the standard Raider, then that would probably tip the scales for the 2016 as it gives the option to turn your transport/ support unit into a dedicated tank!. If you like the 2016 though, you've only got a week to pick it up before it's gone! Games Workshop have lifted the lid on some of their upcoming releases at Adepticon - and first off... Idoneth Deepkin. Effectively Dark Elves under the sea, there seems to be an almost Slaaneshi influence to their armour. Certainly some amazing looking kits, both dynamic and powerful. Very curious to read their background and work out where they're from. Have a look at this awesome video! Imperial Knights weren't missed out- not only are they getting a new Codex, they're also getting a very large rearmament! Have a look at this beast! Built around the current Imperial Knight kit, is this an upgrade box, or a whole new model? People seem to be desperate for Sisters of Battle - well 2019 is your year. Not much to see here, but this is the official announcement of all your dreams come true! Have a look at this! This looks like a massive kit - maybe a carriage drawn by horses - and it's all Nagash and his Legions of Death - but it's not just this miniature, it has a very spiky friend... GW took some pretty draconian action on some of the online list builders for 40K, and it was because they were building their own - this video is scant on details, but you get the idea! A new Event Exclusive miniature was also revealed - it's Primaris, so bit of a bummer there, but it's a great stance and powerful looking dude! Some AWESOME reveals there! What do you think of these reveals??
Alrighty - next week the Necrons get their new Codex and to coincide with that there is a new Start Collecting set. Star Collecting Necrons is actually one of the few Start Collecting Sets released so far for the new 8th Edition Codex - BUT before the 2016 version disappears, which one is better value?. The 2016 version of the Start Collecting has Necron Warriors (plus Scarab Swarm) a Necron Overlord and the awesome looking Triarch Stalker! If you were to buy them separately at retail, you'd be looking at $163 AUD.
The 2018 version of Start Collecting Necrons has Necron Warriors (plus Scarab Swarm), the same Necron Overlord, an Annihilation Barge/ Catacomb Command Barge and a unit of Necron Immortals/ Deathmarks. If you were to buy these separately at retail you'd be paying $194 AUD. So monetarily 2018 wins, and with two combi-kits in the 2018 version you also have more flexibility and more left over bitz (inlcuding the Necron Overlord left over from the Catacomb Command Barge if you build the Annihilation Barge option). Each of these sets give a really nice core to your army, but the 2018 version, as well as being more flexible, gives you more options in terms of tactical play with the Deathmarks/ Immortals combi-kit giving you either snipers or heavy hitting power, plus the Barge option mentioned earlier. The 2016 version does have the Triarch Stalker which is hands down one of my favourite models EVER, but the room it takes up in the box means you miss out on some other goodies - which are in the 2018 version. - Long time Necron players, let us know if we've missed something here. Always happy for feedback |
