This guy was painted with a mix of GW paints, and that's the Death Guard Green for the base colour - I wonder if it's so perfect on purpose? He is also extensively weathered, with GW washes for rust and then 4B pencil for the paint ships. This heavily weathered look was inspired by MS 8th Team which takes place on earth and involves urban and jungle warfare - a perfect way to get paint chips! The rust is only in a few places as it seemed a bit heavy for the scale. Scale is a major problem I have with GW weathered vehicles. On something that scale you would be unlikely to see the heavy paint chipping or orange rust we're seeing in the current meta, but for something this scale (1/35 or larger) it would be more obvious. Anyway, that's just my theory. So very happy with this for a first go especially with it only take a couple day days to do.
It's not often I get to do Gundam - they're pretty involved, but when I saw these Gundam Exceed Zaku 2 heads the other day, it seemed like a bit of cheap fun! You can pick them up for a few dollars (at least overseas, in Australia they are around $10) so why the Hell not!? The base model is, as I said above, a Gashapon toy, that in Japan you would probably get at a vending machine or on the counter of a local shop. They start off as a ball, that breaks apart and you get the multi-part toy inside. You could just leave it like that.. or go nuts and do this instead!! Hahaha.

If you've been reading this blog for a while, you'll probably know that Gundam is a constant tempting mistress! The amazing mechs from the anime series that has been running for almost 40 years are not only great looking, but also excellent kits to build.
Well today we found a cool blog called Gundam Kits Collection.com and among other things on the site was the work of Billy Ray Estrada. Recently they posted his awesome 1/100 MSN-06S Char's Zaku II Ver. 2.0 from Gundam Origin. At first sight you might think it's a pretty simple paint job, until you realise it involved a custom paint job, custom details, custom panel line, color separation, custom decals, scratch built parts. This is the kind of stuff that can't help to inspire! Amazing work! Do you do Gunpla? Have some of your work to share? Let us know... This weekend was SMASH, one of Sydney's burgeoning conventions - this one centering on anime and manga. SMASH is also the venue for Gunpla each year, and boy did we pick a good year not to enter because the selection of entries was not only varied, but also exquisite. From beautifully done single models, with such clean lines, to dioramas, to large models with LEDs. There was even an entry done by a class of students from a local primary school. Not only are there great models by entrants into Gunpla, there's also a chance to see some of the kits from Bandai soon to hit our shores - and occasionally something you can't buy but is SOOO cool!.
As you may be aware, last year's Australian Gunpla 2013 was my first, and I did okay - well I placed!
This year I'm at it again, this time with the very detailed Master Grade 1/100 MG MS-06S Char's Zaku II Version. 2.0. I mean who doesn't love a Zaku?! To keep up to date with the progress, check out the Race to Gundam 2014 section of this site I've written before about my unholy love for the Gundam and more correctly it's Zeon enemy. This of course found it's ultimate form in me entering Gunpla, the international Gundam modal building competition in 2013. Well today I finally got my hands on the original series made in 1979 and frankly... it's not bad. The animation is pretty rough, but no worse than Battle of the Planets or Votron, and the mecha designs remain solid. If you've held off on getting the series, don't! It's worth a look and gives you the roots of the Universal Century timeline. Yes, it's true, we won.. well equal eighth - but that's technically still winning, isn't it?
Not bad for 9 days work and a first-time entry I suppose. To see the trials and tribulations, the recipe and some bad pictures - go here...
After a bit of a disaster, I'm now a fair bit behind where I want to be - but these bits are done - or are they? Repainting, changes of mind and inevitable mistakes make this an interesting journey. Now Padwan, enter the Race to GunPla My Gunpla entry was a bit of a hit on Instagram. In tjhe past 12 hours, I've had 29 likes - and from people I don't know...
