This many metallics on one mini is unusual, but I think the balance is basically right.
I haven't done many Terminators for the XIIth Legion War Hounds. Having spent so long formulating the markings for the MKII and MKIII armour, having to work out the Cataphractii pattern hasn't had much priority - but when I had a flash of inspiration the other day at work I had to get it out. Using the Praetor body, and Cataphractii Power Claw, and Goliath head and then adding extra armour to the hips via Goliath Shoulders pads, this guy fits the War Hounds look. The new shoulder pads are from MasterCrafted Miniatures, who we have bought quite a bit off - especially their excellent spikey shoulders, perfect for War Hounds! This is the first time using two spiked shoulders, so I had to move the markings to the chest, which had the detail trimmed off. The Iron Halo on the top of the carapace is from a Stormcast and adds some height and rank to this important part of the army. Obviously the dedication to Volkite continues across the army and the colour scheme is basically an amped up version of the current Termies I have in the force.

So it's been a pretty busy time and I haven't updated the hobby projects for a while, and a bit has got done - from a test scheme for the Skitarii Rangers for my DIY Titan Order Legio, to some War Hounds which are really starting to come together in terms of character and look... finally! This update also gave me the opportunity to test out the crappy cheap photobooth I bought on eBay. That was a $20 I won't be getting back anytime soon hahaha! Skitarii Ranger of Legio BallistaLegio Ballista has been a project that's been in the works for decades. Born as a tribute to the great Bolt Thrower, the look of Legio Ballista has pretty much gone unchanged since the late 90s - no surprise when you look at it! You may have seen this Kastelan before, and there's also a Rhino in the same colour scheme - well now they have a Ranger to keep them company. This was a little bit fiddly to do, but not horrible. The miniature itself has lots of hidden detail, and overall I'm pretty happy with it. Obviously now the photo has been taken I need to go and touch up a few things though! War Hounds Legion UpdateI'm going to put it out there - I've never been good at painting officers. There's this fine line between too much bling and just a guy with a plume on his helmet! So I set about to practise what an officer in the War Hounds Legion would look like.
Fist up was the Breacher Squad Sergeant. Really happy with the pose of this guy and this is the first time I've painted Lightning Claws. The torso is a Death Guard one, but perfect for this guy. This is also the first time I decided on the symbol on the shoulders of the Breachers, a smaller Assault cross which seems to be okay. The Assault Squad Sergeant was a bit of fun. Now having double Lightning Claws was interesting and fits well with the War Hounds fearsome reputation. The scroll was added for adornment and I did a similar decoration on one of the Lightning Claws that appears on the Legion Praevian from last month. Notice also the MasterCrafted spiked pauldron. He nearly had two, but thought that was overkill! Not an officer as such, but the Veteran Tactical Vox guy was a chance to try a different type of comms unit which I built onto his glove with Green Stuff and also the face tattoo which I really like. Bit of a risk but he looks hard as frakk! My first attempt at a Plasma Gun too, steep learning curve there, not entirely happy. This blog is often seen as synonymous with War Hounds Legion, being that's it's a rare one for people to build, but squirreling away in the back of the Beardy Hammer dungeon is a secret so dark that it must clothe itself in black - it is the desire to make Dark Angels. Not just any Dark Angels mind you, but those untainted by Lion-El Douchbag, the Terran Dark Angels who - once abandoned by their Primarch - were then unfairly seen as heretics and forced to flee in shame and become The Fallen. Now hunted by their former Brothers, The Fallen still remain loyal to the Emperor but bitter towards their former comrades. This project started as an idea to make Consecrator Space Marines - 40K loyalists clad in the old armour marks of their Progenitor Chapter, the old black and red of the Terran Dark Angels. Then as I made the first one (above far right) I wondered why not just make some Fallen. They're cool with an awesome backstory (until Forge World retcons it which they're sure to do) and classic armour from back in the Rogue Trader days. The only difficulty is that the shoulder icon was a bit different back thyen. Forge World make a really ornate one, and then I saw that Pop Goes the Monkey on Shapeways make exactly what I was looking for. I already had War Hounds and Consecrator ones from them, so now I added Dark Angel ones and THEY ARE FRAKKIN' AMAZING! Not too thick, just perfect (below right). Hands down one of the best after market 40K products available. Once I teamed those with the MKIV Space Marines from Betrayal at Calth and the always amazing Veteran Shoulderpads from Mastercrafted (below left) I was set! The Dark Angel;s themselves are a very matte, very dark black with muted colours only red, white and a splash of green. I wanted these guys to really be the Angels of Death their history portrays them as. Overall I'm pretty happy as a start. The seeming re-emergence of The Fallen in the latest 40K story arch is fun, so lets see what happens! So far each of them have different heraldry, an idea i'd like to continue on these grizzled old veterans of a once less treasonous time. The MKVI Space Marine armour is iconic! In most Games Workshop artwork it has been superseded by the MKVII armour with it's rounded shapes and pig-nosed helmet, but love for the MKVI still resides with certain Chapters of the Adeptus Astartes and in the hearts of many Beardys who remember it as the very first Space Marine kit! The MK VI has three halmarks; the beakie helmet, the long greaves and the studded shoulder pad. In the years where we saw very little MKVI product, the studded shoulder disappeared almost all together, but in an age where The Horus Heresy is in vogue, everything that is old is new again with studded shoulders turning up on all sorts of Space Marines. Luckily enough there is no need to stick to the standard kind, because Master Crafted Miniatures have a range of MKVI compatible shoulder to deck your troops out in! + + More After The Jump + + If you are a regular reader of this site you may have seen the fledgling War Hounds Legion force we have been working on. It's been a bit of a slow road - I am very jealous of people who can batch paint lots of miniatures. For me it is one at a time! I've recently worked out the way to get the blue consistent and the weathering of the white as well as squad markings, mixing the limited background fluff with the rules and then translating that onto the models. With that in mind I have now added four Tactical Marines to the War Hounds, experimenting with more dynamic posing as well the the Master Crafted Spikey Veteran Shoulder we reviewed the other week. Below is a brief look at the new additions to the force. If you'd like more info on each, head across to the Project: War Hounds page to check out some of the details and background thoughts. Here's a group shot of the four new additions. You can see by the first image I was working on some more dynamic poses, and the second image gives you a look at all their extra stabby bits!
Master Crafted are at it again with a new set of spiked shoulder pads for Space Marines. You may have seen our review a short time ago on the Veteran Spiked Shoulders, and I received my second shipment today so I thought you might like a look! As you may know, I am building a War Hounds force, the progenitors to the World Eaters. I wanted to create some kind of visual link between the two Legions and War Hounds also had some spiked elements to their armour, even though. Forge World told me in an email that the War Hounds had some spiked armour, but weren't as spikey as the World Eaters Having been so impressed with the Veteran Spiked Shoulders I bought previously, I can't help but use them a little bit - and with this new lot, there will be some more! So, here's a look at Master Crafted's new Spiked Shoulders. + + More After The Jump + +
