In most Games Workshop artwork it has been superseded by the MKVII armour with it's rounded shapes and pig-nosed helmet, but love for the MKVI still resides with certain Chapters of the Adeptus Astartes and in the hearts of many Beardys who remember it as the very first Space Marine kit!
The MK VI has three halmarks; the beakie helmet, the long greaves and the studded shoulder pad.
In the years where we saw very little MKVI product, the studded shoulder disappeared almost all together, but in an age where The Horus Heresy is in vogue, everything that is old is new again with studded shoulders turning up on all sorts of Space Marines.
Luckily enough there is no need to stick to the standard kind, because Master Crafted Miniatures have a range of MKVI compatible shoulder to deck your troops out in!

You might remember our look at Master Crafted's spikey shoulder range a little while back. We teased these at the time, so now lets have a look at the range of MKVI alternative shoulders for Space Marines.
Rimless Studded Veteran Shoulderpad
I'm going to start with my favourite in the MKVI range, and that is the Rimless Studded Veteran Shoulder.
Being a fan of the look of the standard MKVI, this update that would be perfect for Sternguard, Marine officers, or even just an alternative to the standard shoulders on any MKVI.

Like all Master Crafted Shoulders, you get 5 on a sprue with a thin but strong semi circular connection going down to the block. This is easily cut through and leaves no dents or chips out of the perfectly rounded clean lines. The studs are sizeable enough to get good detail on without any of the moulding drop off that can be seen on GW MKVI shoulders.
Damaged Rimless Studded Shoulderpads
Damaged vehicles and armour is all the rage at the moment in the 40k universe with armour chips and gouges appearing pretty regularly especially on Veterans. Well the Damaged Rimless Studded Shoulders gives you five unique shoulders that have had heavy to minor damage. Gouges from blades and munitions as well as some serious scorching that has reduced the surface back to the structural building blocks and even one with what could be acid splash or even radioactivity damage.
I don't generally do battle damage, but I'm thinking a Veteran Assault Squad Sergeant with the one with battle damage from what looks like claws could be very cool!
Master Crafted also make a damage-free version which is a massive improvement on the GW one!

Damaged Rimless Shoulderpads
As well as the studded shoulder, the MKVI had a smooth rimless shoulder on the other side.
Traditionally this carried both the Chapter symbol, the Tactical/ Assault/ Devastator designation and sometimes the Company number. A lot to have on one shoulder, but it did look very cool!!
Master Crafted make smooth version of this and a damaged one!
The Damaged Rimless Shoulders have similar damage to the studded ones (above) but more obvious on the smooth surface synonymous with the MKVI giving more options to existing MKVI marines or even sprinkled among your Veterans.
As an aside, the MKVI shoulders look really good on one shoulder of a Space Marine scout...!

So if you're considering MKVI or just want to add some nice details to Veterans or line infantry, then these Master Crafted ones are a pretty good way to go. The Forge World miniatures have certainly brought the old Marks of Space Marine Armour back, but after a while I found they all started to look the same. THIS is a way to make something original and also add character to your miniatures.
