I must admit it is with delight that I can report that The Ginger Fury is now over. Those little men with their flapping loin cloths are no longer the entire and all-consuming interest of the White Dwarf crew. We can move onto other things - namely Chaos. Chaos has an interesting place in White Dwarf, not only is it popular with the readers and varied enough not to get too repetitive (ignoring the 28,000 mentions of Nurgle last year), Chaos is also excellent filler, and that's what this issue of White Dwarf felt like. Maybe it's me - maybe it's Age of $igmar - but I was not enthralled. Chaos does play a big part in this issue, but in reality, a large part of the Chaos range is pretty outdated now and in dire need of some new minis. Personally I think the Chaos Warriors are excellent and eternal, but the Marauders, for example, are pretty old hat now. So was this issue any good? + + More After The Jump + + |

There was a time, Fellow Traveler, that Chaos Warriors came in all colours. Of course the now standard Games Workshop black and of course some red, but also blue and yellow and pink and green, purple and orange and... oh I already said blue! These were the days of a more characterful (not a real word, so I copyright it!) Chaos Warrior. Some of them had names and they were coming off the back of what were called Chaos Champions, a hangover from the days of collaboration between Games Workshop, D&D and TSR. Now I've always been a bit of a sucker for a Chaos Warrior in green - they just look cool! In the current universe, I guess these would be Chaos Undivided, certainly not one with the current pantheon of Gods - a once battle-hardened and noble warrior filled with the desire to conquer in the only way he knows how - with blood and iron!. It was actually great fun to go for this older look again. The base is Caliban Green with a wash of Abaddon Black, the highlight is a mix of the base and Gretchin Green. The palette is purposely very restricted in keeping with the style of his roots way back in the late 80s. I hope you like this little experiment in colouring - who knows, maybe yellow is next! There's a challenge...
So what do you think of the Grand Alliances? Have you fiddled with them? Have you found some holes that don't quite make sense?
Keen to hear your thoughts...
It's a real shame to see these excellent decal sheets go.
They were not only great value, but also flexible for all kinds of models - from troops to vehicles big and small. They also had a very military rather than sci-fi look to them; simple and functional - as true operational military markings are!
