 | It's interesting getting back to buying White Dwarf from the local GW than one you don't usually go to. One thing I discovered is that the North American WD is different from others. The Australian one, at least, is printed in the UK on thinner paper, where the US/ Canadian one is printed in the US on thicker paper so it was interesting to compare. - Now what the frakk is going on? I go away for two weeks and I get back and Games Workshop bring out a bunch of pantless Dwarves! Seriously - all I can think of is their lioncloth lifting up in combat and some unsuspecting Orc getting a horrible eyeful of unkempt ginger fury! Eeeeeww... ~ You will never look at these minis the same way now ~ The release of the Fyreslayers takes up the bulk of this issue, but it also opens up a few interesting changes to the way Factions are used & glimpses of future releases. + + More After The Jump + + |
The Vulkite Berserkers (not to be confused with Volkite weapons in WH40K) are the front line of the Dwarven Fyreslayers who - like all Fyreslayers - are descendants of the the warrior God Grimnar.
This set are your troops - 10 miniatures for $100 AUD/ $70 CAN/ $50 US. That's not horrible pricing, but still in the higher realm of troop builder pricing.
The miniatures themselves are very nice, with large helmets, expressive faces and an extensive array of weapon options. This seems to be a great kit for any Dwarven player as because of the amount of weapons you could add to your bitz box. Speaking of bitz... what's with the lack of pants? I heard all kinds of excuses this morning - everything from the climate to their bodies naturally radiating heat. I'm sorry, but the thought of flapping loin cloths on the battlefield scares me no end. That's an overshare, Fyreslayers!

The Auric Hearthguard is a combi-kit shared with the Hearthguard Berzerkers, with the Auric Hearthguard being an elite guard and armed with the very cool looking Magmapike. These are very nice and seem to have even more detail than the Vulkite Berzerkers, but as an elite unit the price goes up - we're looking at 5 miniatures for $70 AUD/ $50 CAN/ $40 US.
The Hearthguard Berzerkers, is a combi-kit shared with the Auric Hearthguard, with the Hearthguard Berzerkers taking responsibility for guarding the leaders of the Fyreslayer lodges. Sharing almost all the same parts as the Auric Hearthguard, these are very nice models... with thankfully longer loin cloths!
Speaking of leaders, here is the Auric Runemaster, a priest of the Fyreslayers lodge. Another stunningly detailed model, he comes in at the now standard price for $igmar characters at $50 AUD/ $$35 CAN/ $30 US which is pretty hefty considering the prices of characters pre-$igmar at around $25, and this guy is half the size too haha!
Few interesting other releases this week, with the 2nd part of The Beast Arises, Predator Prey, being released. I have the first part on audio book and found it a little laborious with detail, but it certainly sets the scene for a much larger story to be told.
The next Realmgate Wars audio drama is also out, The Bridge of Seven Sorrows. Be curious to know if these are any good. Anyone buying these?

Paint Splatter is back and pretty ordinary, but the flames tutorial is quite good.
There's also a section on the Warriors of Grimnar and their Lodges... which sound quite a bit like Chapters!

This is a look at some of the art around the Fyreslayers, which you'd have to say is just beautiful!
Following on from lats week's extended plug for one of the New Year New Army products, this week it's the Tyranids. I like this box and am quite tempted by it... though personally I'd think there would be Genestealers in an invasion horde, at least according to the fluff.
Included in the issue today is a glimpse of these amazing looking Fyreslayers mounts. Very similar to some of the Seraphon mounts., these obviously carry with them some serious fire abilities and have some really amazing looking riders!
This was pointed out to me by my GW guy - have a look at these Savage Orcs riding wyverns!
You would have to think this could be in the pipeline pretty soon, and with 2016 supposedly the year for all flavours of Orcs (40k included) then we may see this pretty soon!

Verdict
As far as issues go, this is pretty good.
The Fyreslayers are not just a new race, they are a new faction. It seems they can ally with anyone who will pay them with ur-gold, the magical substance they crave like Homer craves donuts. This effectively means that any army you have could ally with these guys if they were being paid. I heard talk of alliances with Chaos this morning or even the Undead. This certainly opens up the use of factions outside the traditional racial alliances and can only be good for the future of Warhammer.
