 | For the most part, Warhammer 40K has always been very land-based - tanks, infantry, mechs - it's all about the foot slogging, exploding artillery shells and trenches. It's not that aircraft haven't existed, Hell the Dark Eldar are all about the skimmers and flyers, but having a rule set other than "Imma Gonna Strafe You!" just haven't really been that important... UNTIL NOW! Loved Top Gun but needed more Orks - well have we got news for you - there is a now a rule set to make it so. Death From The Skies brings not only a new rule set, but also some new missions and two new kits - the Wazbom Blastajet and the Stormhawk Interceptor. Interestingly though, this week's White Dwarf is not obsessed with it. It's not wall to wall flyers. Sure there's the kits, an overview of the book and a battle report, but they still leave room for ONE OF THE BEST PAINTED ARMIES i HAVE EVER SEEN!. I am not kidding... One of the joys of Space Marines (and Imperial Guard I suppose) is the huge range of aftermarket upgrades out there to make your Chapter look truly unique. One of the really unique ones is the Astrium Legio Rapax Upgrade Set from Werewoolf Miniatures. Based on the ancient Roman Lorica Segmentata armour, the whole set includes torsos, heads and shoulders - but the elements are available indivdually as well. Although not perfect for every Space Marine Chapter, these would certainly suit Ultramarine veterans, any of the Progenitor Chapters in the days of the Horus Heresy, or if you wanted a bit of a tweek on the ancient Greek look, they could be used in a Minotaurs force.    I've ordered a set of the heads to see what they will look like in my War Hounds Legion and will hopefully have a review for you soon.
For lucky Warhammer 40K fans in the UK and Irish Republic, there is now a subscription service to get a large collection of Warhammer 40K hardback novels. When you've collected the whole set, the binders create a large scene from the 40K universe. But it's not just the novels - there are also exclusive gifts you get for free for continuing your subscription. The subscrition is being run by Hachette, who also do a Judge Dredd one and many others. If you are in that area of the world, this could be well worth subscribing to.
 The new trailer for Rogue One - A Star Wars Story has launched, and for the keen-of-eye there rae all kinds of easter eggs to discover. Sure there's an appearance by Gonk, but for me the real discovery was at least three new kinds of Stormtroopers - did you spot them?  You can very clearly see the original (and best) Stormtroopers pictured in the foreground, but if you look in the background we can see there's a different type of Stormtrooper in the armoured fighting vehicle. From the limited shot here, the torso and chest armour looks the same, but a different helmet and shoulder armour make these AFV crews stick out. Look forward to seeing more of these guys. Another questions that arises from this picture is the vehicle? What is it?
The Stormtrooper that is getting the most attention are these black-clad Stormtroopers. With their vicious looking helmet and padded pauldron, these guys are sure to be a hit. In a later shot we see the blasters which seem to be more flamethrower than blaster by the look of the barrels (above right). The armour looks similar in plate distribution, but they seem to be different shapes. Very curious!  Now this is a bit of a mystery - running with these Stormtroopers are what look like a cross between the AT-RT drivers from the prequels and the iconic Biker Scouts first seen in Return of the Jedi. They seem to have an off-white tan/green armour on the upper body and the calves, but the thighs are not armoured. Are these scouts or maybe they are allies? Their blasters don't look like Imperial blasters, unless they are specialist troops of some description.  This shot has been seen quite a lot and seems to be a TIE Fighter pilot uniform, but what are those things on her back? Are they batons - TMNT-style? We know the basic plot is about hot the Rebels got the plans to the Death Star, so infiltration in a TIE Fighter uniform does make sense.  Not a Stormtrooper - but this officer is in the uniform of the Imperial security services. His appearance on the Death Star might point to the thought that the Empire knows there are spies around and he's come on to hunt them down. Is that a blaster/ cane combination he's got there? As an unabashed fan of the Empire, I really like all of these designs and can't wait to see how they are put into the universe. What do you think of them? How do you think they fit in?
This morning Games Workshop released the video for the upcoming 30th Anniversary Space Marine, and I noticed something a little strange - the right shoulder armour has been changed. The original picture (left) shows a circular disc moulded into the shoulder like the original model we mentioned from 30 years ago. The right shoulder on the Space Marine in the new video is smooth (right)! Could there be a choice of shoulder pads? Could they have changed the design on the final model? What do you think? Do you like the old school disc or prefer the smooth? + + Update + +Bit of an update today - looks like we were right - there are alternate shoulder pads!!
