Dark Eldar Wracks Unboxing & Finecast Comparison Review

The release of the Dark Eldar Wracks today was not only an exciting new release, it also gives the opportunity to compare these almost identical sculpts to the Finecast Wracks releases some years ago!
The Wracks are the soldiers of the Haemonculi - body modification freaks who build their own force from the body parts of slaves and those willing to be part of this macabre force.
We looked at the Wracks a bit last week, but here's the unboxing of one of the strangest units in WH40K.

The Wracks box appears in the new scheme for WH40K products and includes the seemingly alternate colour scheme for the Wracks on the back. Also notice the "bonus bits" box in the top right.

Pretty standard instructions - very busy though and not overly clear at times.
You can see here the "bonus bits" for the vehicle crews.

Speaking of which, this is the Venom pilot torso and head. Ever wondered what a Wrack looks like without his backpack? Wonder no more!

As usual with Dark Eldar you get a bevvy of deadly looking weapons, none more-so than those nasty looking scythes! Also have a look at that brilliant looking hand (left). 
That may be the best sculpted hand in GW history!

Now these are some cool looking guns! I love the look of the Liquifier. I'd like to see more Dark Eldar guns like this! Very retro sci-fi!!

Like their Finecast forebears, the Wracks bodies are in one part - but unlike the Finecast version, we get to chose both the arms and the face!
Also - why the bare feet/ sandals?? It's just weird...

Most of the bodies are in one piece, but there are a few in a couple of parts.

Here is a close-up of the fairly vicious two-part claw. Awesome looking addition to the squad leader!
Also notice just some of the alternate heads/ face plates.

There are also armour plates for the sides of some of the bodies (left) and each hump is different! Notice the IV bag on this one! 

The finished model is very tidy indeed! Assembly is a bit fiddly around the hump area as the instructions aren't very thorough. The face fits very snuggly as do the arms. Happily the figure is also perfectly balanced because as with other WH40K models it doesn't have a slottabase.

Head to Head - The Finecast Comparison

The first thing you notice about the two models is that the Finecast is lightly taller.
The Finecast is also more in proportion, less stocky slightly and a bit more dynamic.
Jes Goodwin's knowledge of anatomy comes to the fore here as you can see the difference between the muscles on the Finecast he did and the new plastic one that imitates it so heavily.

There are advantages to the plastic kit though. The join between the hump and the figure is seamless on the plastic, but a real fiddle on the Finecast. This also shows the level of detail on the Finecast around the arms and hump area.
The topknot is interestingly separate on the plastic versions which is nice and much more detailed.

If you compare the torsos and waists of the two, the Finecast has a lot more detail to it and has a more fetish edge to the cincher around the waist. Again you can see that they are very similar, there just seems to be more character to the Finecast figures - that slight turn of the head and tilted down a bit.

The cross beam on the hump is a real pain! The instructions are not good for this and a fair bit of cutting and trimming had to be done around the syringes that are supposed to go into the backpack from it. 
That being said, the detail is very good on it.

As much as the Finecast was a bit of a pain to put together and not trimming the soapy resin was fiddly, the overall character of the Finecast for me wins the day.
The new plastic ones are very nice, have great weapons options and I'm sure will fill many people's armies - but if you're looking for a feature piece or something with a bit more character, hunt out the Finecast version.
