 | When Space Marines first appeared there was a much more visible hierarchy when it came to rank..There wasn't just a Sergeant and a Captain and Chapter Master as seems to be the case in 40K these days. Thankfully with Forge World delving into the past for their Horus Heresy series, some of that old lore if back. You may have read our story on Great Crusade era markings which goes into more depth but as I finished my War Hounds Sergeant yesterday I kept remembering that there used to be rank insignia on the old Space marine Transfer Sheets, but for the life of me I couldn't remember of they came in the original Space marine Paint Set or with the MKVI beaky head marines.. ... and there in the box for the original Citadel Miniatures Paint Set I found them!

| The decals look a little brown, but when soaked they were perfect . See here the Sergeant stripes with the chapter symbol integrated into it. You get two normal Sergeants and two Veteran Sergeant's stripes per sheet - the Veteran stripes are denoted by the diamond shape (right) |  |

The Sergeant's stripes were always meant to go on the forearm and generally on the helmet too, but due to their size I just used the forearm as is seen in some of the Horus Heresy illustrations from Forge World.
If done today they would probably be smaller so they could also go on the shoulder pad a bit easier.
Cutting away the chapter symbol from the transfer sheet was easy and clean to do.
I plan on adding one of these to the top of the shoulder pad on my Veteran Tactical Sergeant using the red Space Wolf version. Seems appropriate!

Also while rooting around in the Bitz Box of Doom I found the pamphlet of the original Space Marine Paint Set. This is an invaluable tool for banner and also markings - some of which aren't really needed anymore but could come in handy for 30K. I have blown up this image of the banner instructions as it's a really good guide for anyone into Space Marine banners. My dream of a whole army with banners is closer...!
