I've recently been tooling around with the Back 2 Base-ix 5000 Series Battle Boards so I needed to use my older Games Workshop Warhammer 40,000 Basing Kit. Like most people I bought it some years ago and have had it stashed away, using a bit here and a bit there, but when it comes to battle boards you tend to use A LOT! So I got out my older set and realised I didn't have a lot, but it should stretch - famous last words! That was of course not the case so I wandered down to my local GW and bought one of the newer ones that can be hung from the pegs. You'd think they'd be the same - Hell you'd think they would be similar. Alas not! + + More After The Jump + + |
The pictures on the box are exactly the same - but the contents are not!
The metal bits are the same. No idea what some of them are meant to be - but the same!
The older ballast is a fine slate (left) while the newer is a larger darker rock (right) that bears NO RESEMBLANCE TO THE ORIGINAL! This of course caused issues with my base!
You can mix the two together, but as you can see below to make an even mix you would need two to three times the amount of older ballast to mix in with the new.
It's called Javis JXGST Grey Ballast Chippings Extra Fine
(I did not but from this retailer BTW - I used eBay)
In fact not only do they make the ballast... they even make it in a mat if you have large areas to cover!!
The amount in each bag fits at least two of the older tubs and you don't have to buy all the other stuff.
I bought an older basing kit on eBay for $30 but the bag itself (all I actually needed) was only about $9.
The larger ballast/ rocks in the sets are also different.
The excellent pieces from the older set (left) have been replaced with what looks like road base (right).
Not at all the same!
So be warned!
