 | White Dwarf have had some really solid issues of late, but with this week's venture back to Age of $igmar I wasn't sure how this was going to go. To my surprise it's not bad, despite there being some not very spectacular miniatures being released this week. It is interesting to see the ghouls as their own faction, aligned with the vampires in some way but not as slaves to them. Age of $igmar has been doing a pretty good job of reinventing what was a pretty generic Fantasy universe - the new allegiances between the Elves is a good example - giving hobbyists the opportunity to run rampant with the range. The only issue with this Flesh-Eater Courts faction is that the miniatures really aren't that amazing. Some are dated and were really only second rank infantry for the Vampire Counts or Undead. It will be interesting to see what they do with this faction - if anything. So is this issue worth a look? ++ More After The Jump ++ |
... and here lies the conundrum, my friend; this picture is awesome! The ghouls look menacing and bat-like, the giant bat thingy is very cool - and that dragon? Sweet!!
BUT...
BUT...
... the actual Crypt Ghoul miniatures are not only dated, but really don't look anywhere near as menacing as that awesome picture! No matter how rotting they look or how many bones they have sticking out of them they actually look quite comedic, over done, silly really. If the miniatures looked like that picture - then this would be an amazing release. These miniatures are pretty dated now and not really something I would think could hold a faction together.
The Crypt Flayers kit definitely hold more promise as far as miniatures goes and can also make the Crypt Horrors if you prefer as well as a number of other monsters. It's certainly a core kit to this universe.
Another multi-kit - the Terrorgheist is pretty awesome and can also make a number of different zombie dragons and even be a mount for a commander.
The Flesh-Eater Courts Battletome is a 104 page book containing the history, warscrolls and some new battle plans to make your army tick happily along.
In other book news - the next in the The Beast Arises series is out. The last ones have been great, but I've lost track.
We see the Ghouls boxed set there, as well as the new Space Wolves Upgrades from Forge World. These are very very cool and are built around MKIII armour - so how could you go wrong!

This is an interesting article. Maybe they don't see enough people playing Age of $igmar - because this is a pretty thorough primer on how to do it - eight pages!
Paint Splatter is doing Ork aircraft. It's interesting to see the reintroduction of drybrushing. It was on the outer for a long time and seems to be making a resurgence. Personally I'm not sure about that on an aircraft, but whatever floats your boat. Nothing revolutionary in this article.
Now here are some lovely looking Space Marines. These are Sten Frodin's Imperial Fists and they are lovely!! So clean and crisp and full of character. These are super-impressive!
Verdict
This issue is not a bad read. The content is spread pretty widely and there's some quite cool small articles in the back section too.
It's probably a hard one to give a verdict on. If you're not into Age of $igmar at all - then give it a miss, but if you're a hobbyist and like to see good pics and some interesting bits and pieces, then pick it up.
