| The Mortarchs of Nagash, Mannfred Von Carstein, Neferata the Queen of Vampires and Arkhan the Black are Necromancer Nagash's most feared Lieutenants and they're all in one box! Riding on Dread Abyssal mounts, these miniatures have caused quite a stir since they were first seen, so much so that pre-orders have been outstripping demand. Shelf stock is low, so if you want one, now is the opportunity you need to grasp - or you can wait until this all dies down a bit. But where's the fun in that? Braving the rain and a suburb with roads closed due to a street festival (ergh) I ventured out this morning and grabbed one of only two on shelf at my local GW. The parts are spaced out over two sprues, excellent economy really, but it does make you wonder why it's priced at AUS $115!
I think $95 (like the Treeman) seems fairer really, but considering this sets importance in the army, maybe that's the rationale!?

The head of Arkhan is really nicely done with some impressive deep details.
Neferata, Queen of Vampires if also very detailed. Her torso and head are really nicely done with the ability to swivel her head. The forearms, like most of the newer WHFB releases are separate and are cut along the elbow joint so there will be little patching up to do.
Mannfred has some of the nicest detailed fully armoured legs I've seen in a while. Equally his torso is very nicely done - the shoulder details almost looking like actual wings. His head's pretty ugly though!
The tips of Mannfred's cloak are separate too and even they carry a haunted look to them.
The Spirit Hosts to swirl around the base really do look they are disembodied and floating, even in their bare grey form.
Arkhan's cape is amazing and large! Interesting that the sword is attached!
There are lots of details all over the models, but the ectoplasmic skulls entombed in the body of the mount are really nice and double sided! How the Hell you'd paint both sides I don't know...

As with previous releases for Warhammer fantasy Battle, the stats are included. Interestingly with this release you get a full data sheet with all the information! This is also in German and French if you are bilingual or wanting to summon an undead from the Continent! | 
The construction of each mount is exactly the same so shares the initial front half of the instructions. It's not until you pic the character you want that the individual pieces come into play. |
Verdict
This is a very nice looking kit, and certainly a huge challenge if you haven't built a miniature in what would be termed the Monster class before.
Ideally thinking in assembly and painting sub-assemblies would be the way to go - it would be a disaster to try and assemble the whole thing then paint it. You could follow the Japanese rule and paint it all on the sprue, then assemble it, but that doesn't seem that much fun!
As far as value goes, this is a major character so I get the price point. but as I said previously I think the $95 would be fairer for a two sprue kit.
