I freely admit I am a slow painter. For me each model is a character and therefore needs attention. This is one of the reasons my War Hounds Space Marines take so long - each on is painstakingly individually painted and detailed. I have toyed with batch painting them before, but just can't quite bring myself to do it. So when the opportunity to paint some Skaven came up I thought it was a pretty good chance to give batch painting a go. + + More After The Jump + + |
I started with three Stormvermin and 24 hours (almost to the hour) later I had three Stormvermin painted and based. Granted that's not that fast and it's not a big number, but I was still happy with the result and don't feel like I compromised too much on the quality of the individual model! I started by undercoating in black spray and giving a very dark brown base coat to all the fur. Then the skin was picked out in a pale flesh colour (in retrospect probably too light). Then I applied the cloak colour. It's not a typical Skaven colour, but I'm running on a theme which ties into that colour. Once those colours were down, I washed the fur with black ink and the flesh with a heavy brown ink. Once the ink was dried I highlighted the cloak. I decided to do this before the wash over it so I could tone down the colour on the cloak. It would be pretty dirty, so seemed fitting. |
Multiple washes dulled and matted the colours enough to fuse them together.
The last thing I did was pick out the armour in a dark metal colour which again received a heavy black ink wash. The rivets and studs were then picked out individually
The tails were pretty rough, mixing the flesh tone with a tiny bit of red and white, then applying that in two coats. The brown was then used to pick out the segments and a lighter pink highlight was applied to each segment of the tail.
I think a black wash over all of it would be too strong and sticking to those two washes is the better idea, though streamling would also be possible if you painted all the base colours forst, highlighted and then just applied your washes.
