We don't tend to mention artists here too much, unless it's to praise Jes Goodwin of course, but today a legendary illustrator, Noriyoshi Ohrai died. Sadly, as much as I admired his work, I didn't know his name, but you may have seen his artwork around for years! Obviously a fan of Frank Frazetta, his ultra realistic and moody scenes with beautifully contrasting colours and amazing composition really make him stand out. Metal Gear Solid (top left) was one you may know him for, or even one of a number of Macross/ Robotech pictures he did (middle left) which really gave a new spin on the space opera from the 80s. He also did a lot of work with Star Wars, and this poster (below) is such an amazing piece! Just have a look at some of the detail - so much better than anything we would have seen in the West. I mean has Empire Strikes Back ever looked so cool? Look at those colours and details! Speaking of which, have you ever seen a more detailed and packed group shot than this Return of the Jedi one (bottom left)? - I admit I don't know much about the background of Noriyoshi Ohrai or all his amazing work, but this article published by Kotaku today shows more of his incredible work. - so if you're a fan or just curious about this amazing artist, then have a read! |
