Warhammer Visions #9 Review - The Good & The Bad!

Warhammer: Visions has been, in the past, pretty sporadic, mainly due to the quality of the photography, lack of content and the repeated images from the months White Dwarfs.
It does seem, however, that Games Workshop might be turning a corner in Warhammer: Visions and some better quality material is appearing.
The Army of the Month gets more pictures and Armies on Parade, instead of being a double page spread, is  actually more of a highlight with lots of good solid images. Kit Bash is also better with WIP shots and Blanchitsu continues to inspire.
On the negative side though, there are still the really washed out Parade Ground pictures. This month they are from the Birmingham Golden Demon and again they are pretty low quality. 
So - is it worth getting?

Lets not beat around the bush here - there are a lot of Dark Eldar in this issue! The first 62 pages are all New Releases and guess what's new this month? There is a spot for Space Hulk there, so fear not!

A lot of these images you will have seen before, but these are good quality images, so if you missed the White Dwarf issues, this will catch you up. Is it just me or is the bombardier shot backwards? 

These pics were all in White Dwarf, but you get a better look in this issue. Pity it's so expensive!

Of all the sections I thought would be good, Forge World should have done it but the pics look a bit washed out and not very detailed. Sad story!

Now this is cool! Rob Gogin and Leo Baker's Orc and Goblin horde. This has a real old school vibe to it with the checkered flags and hooded Goblins. Really nice force and an awesome Rogue Idol or Gork!

The recent addition of more WIPs to the Kit Bash section has actually made it interesting! 

There was a look at Max Faleij and Darren Latham's miniatures in White Dwarf this month, but the two amazing miniatures from Max (below) really show a master at work! Look at the livery on that Titan leg which is then mirrored on the pilot! Smashing stuff.

As I said earlier, the Armies on Parade section has been expanded to really showcase these forces.
The autumnal Wood Elves are really impressive. An amazing use of colour on these guys by Matt Hutson!

The icey look to Mark Bedford's Tyranids is also amazing. Some of them are just huge! Big fan of this alternate colour scheme!

You don't see these much, but these High Elves are a really nice addition. The colour scheme is reminiscent of Sea Elves, so interesting!

You know, many years ago (in a galaxy far far away) I was never a fan of John Blanche's messy look at the WH40k universe. What he did with the normal minis just looked to deconstructed to me. But when he (and those who emulate him) get free reign on a subject, they really convey the true darkness of the universe. Blanchitsu is a place where this is shown at it's best. Amongst other things, have a look at Cedric Lurkin's work - it''s really inspirational stuff.

Verdict

This is actually not a bad issue - there have been worse. The armies are nice and the detailed shots they now have really give you a better idea of how much detail people put into their work.
Here's hoping we'll soon see an end to those washed out yellow Golden Demon shots!
