White Dwarf #31 Review - Horsemen of the Apocalypse

If this Nagash thing hasn't hit like Sharknado, I don't know what has!
My local store had one Nagash model left after being open for 15 minutes and a tonne of orders behind the counter, so it's no surprise what dominates this weeks White Dwarf.
Last week it was the man himself, this week it's his minions, The Mortarchs and some army boxed sets full of all sorts of undead-ery!
With all this skeleton-heavy content, there's also a new spray colour which will hopefully make building your force a breeze.
In non-Nagash news, there's a tutorial on photographing your minis and... well that's about it. You'd better be in to Nagash of his Mortarchs to get into this issue!

The main focus of this issue are Nagash's trusty lieutenants, The Mortarchs.
These miniatures are awesome - and all in the same box. Obviously you can't build all three from the one box, but this kit can be any of the three. Again GW showing how flexible they can be with their newer plastic sets - seems pretty smart to me and also opens up avenues of parts swapping and conversions. I mean everyone needs to change their outfit now and then!

Mannfred Von Carstein has NEVER looked cooler. This is a big step up for the bald guy and the paint job on this mini is supreme. He's been hitting the gym too, so more power to him!

Arkhan the Black, Nagash's trusty wingman, really ties in the Tomb Kings elements but at the same time some of the feel of the Vampire Counts. The head on his mount is really cool!

Hello ladies! Neferata the Vampire Queen is probably the most dynamic of the sets with a very Vampire Counts feel to her.

There are 3 current army deals depending on your flavour - Neferata's Army of the Silver Pinnacle, Arkhan's Black Host and Mannfred's Army of Sternieste.
Interesting they don't include the general in any of these sets - maybe to keep the price down!?
Having a look at the sets GW show in these pictorials, they have really done a great job on the detail. These are some of the best paint jobs I have seen on Undead (below).

The usual end of month ad for Warhammer: Visions is featured with a rundown of the contents - one of which is the 2013 Golden Demons. Not sure last years awards are really something to crow about! They were... last year! There's also a look at the new Zandri Dust spray - perfect for all those undead!

This article on the undead, vampires and Nagash the Necromancer builds on the small bits we read last week. Interesting stuff if you're following this WHFB story line.

Matt Hutson's Vampire Counts force is pretty damn cool! Matt also gives a bit of a spoiler about a few other returning characters.

Paint Splatter is Mannfred and his trusty steed, Dread Abyssal. This is pretty simple stuff and seems more condensed than it should be for the complexity of the finished paint job.

Edgar Ramos, you dark genius, the the designer of The Mortarchs and here we get an insight into his vision. Initially Arkhan was going to be the only model in the kit, but he wanted to squeeze at least one more option in so we got Mannfred and then Neferata as a bonus. He took his inspiration for her from the Coven Throne. 

As far as the larger article go, this is the last of the large ones and it'a about photographing your minis. Any help I can get is good! I notice they don't mention the use of filters on Nagash as we discovered last week...!

Verdict

If you're following the whole Nagash story or you like WHFB, then get this issue. There's a fair bit of background and stuff to read, so you may as well especially if you're not forking out the $140 on the Nagash book but you want to get involved!
