For the past few years, Games Workshop have released a number of painting guides - some very good and some pretty poor (Sons of Sanguinnius I'm looking at you). Well this week, with an absolute bevy of new paint and hobby related items on pre-order, Games Workshop have pretty much created their own Painting Guide within the pages of White Dwarf #94. With new paints, larger Shades pots, a new army carrier, mugs and a snazzy Age of Sigmar-themed, measuring tape, this is certainly the issue to do it in - and I have to say, surprisingly given the limitations of the publication, they do it very well! Taking us step by step through the various techniques, as well as specialist paints, this is a great refresher for those who might not be so familiar with the new paints and also a great starting point for newbies. But this is not just about painting - there's also... + + More After The Jump + + |
First off we get the new additions to the Citadel Dry range. It's interesting to see drybrushing making a comeback. It was THE highlighting technique back in the 90s, but fell out of favour as people moved towards layering and blending - well now it's back and these new dry compounds are made just for it! not only do we get the paints, there's also a Drybrush Set (odd...) proving that everything can be put into a box!

Great news for painters of all ilks - the Citadel Shades are now available in larger bottles. now if you're army painting, you know how many of these you go through. For colours like Nuln Oil, Agrax Earthshade and ones you use a lot, this is a great idea!

To go with your harness (or maybe use them as earrings - whatever floats your boat - the Citadel ID Tags are up and the Citdadel Water Pots are back, this time without the Macragge Blue one... weird!

Meanwhile, the Project Paint Set gets a plug, as does the Citadel Rangefinder, which is a pretty snazzy measuring tape with some really nice details. Have a look at the small icons on the tape itself.

In the world of books, we get a compilation of Ultramarines stories in Legends of the Dark Millenium: Ultramarines, Daemon World is back in print from Black Library as is the new compilation of the Sanctus Reach-themed stories.
As I said previously, this is pretty extensive and certainly detailed taking you through the Basecoating, Washing, Drybrushing, Layering, Glazing, and Basing stages.
It also goes through the brushes, undercoating, and has a number of decent hints from The Golden Demon.
It also goes through the Technical Paints in a really easy and well put together way (top right)
