 | Week 3 of the Astra Militarum releases sees this edition of White Dwarf dominated by the hulking Abhumans of renown - the Ogryns and their newly crowned brethren, Bullgryn. Abhumans are a really interesting addition to the Imperial Guard (Astar Militarum) as they are in direct philosophical conflict with the Space Marines who would refuse to serve along side them. Some other famous Abhumans would be the Ratlings, and if you go far enough back the Squats and Beastmen in Imperial service. I would dearly love to see Beastmen return to Imperial service, but it's so unlikely I think we might see Squats before then! So - apart from a really cool Commissar model, what else is in this issue of White Dwarf? More after the jump... |
It would probably be unfair to categorise this issue as only focusing on one thing... but this issue really only focuses on one thing - Ogryn!
On the week where the Codex is released you'd expect there to be some more information for those still hedging their bets on whether to buy it or not, or maybe some alternate colour schemes on the Astra Militarum Tempestus, but they really seem to have all their eggs in one basket - and it's a basket with 3 miniatures in it for $65.

So we start out with the new kids on the block, the Bullgryns. A really interesting expansion on the original Ogryns who go WAAAY back to Rogue Trader. Interesting to see the Bullgryns as the main focus, especially when in the Designer's Notes it's stated that this was the secondary design for this kit. This release was originally envisioned as being all about the Ogryns.

There's some really nice design touches to the Bullgryns; from the tank tracks to guard their happy-bits, to the imposing masks/ respirators. I do like the one on the right - reminds me of Splinter Cell!
The new power mauls look great and I'm sure will be ending up on Assault Terminators fro the next few years. I'd actually like to see one of these guys next to a Terminator just to get an idea of size.
Oh, can I say at this point, I HATE that blue colour scheme!

And for those playing at home - here's a return of an old favourite Nork Deddogg! What an epic Ripper gun, and the Commissar's hat on his Voxcaster. is just a brilliant touch. I'd liek an alternate head, but the kit seems really top quality! This may end up coming home with me!

The pictures for all 3 of the Ogryn features are actually really nice - a departure from recent issues where the photography has been less then stellar.
I suppose we can expect these to be recycled into next months Warhammer Visions...

Commissars - what bastards - but boy do their models look good! This is a really nice addition, keeping with the traditional look and producing a mini that would really add a lot to your army.

Another scant Battle Report. I think they either have to flesh these out or do more pictures because at the moment i'm not sure either the gamer or the hobbyist audience is getting what they want here.
There is however quite a nice little conversion mixing the Tempestus kit wit the Cadian Command one. Have a look at the beret on the flag bearer. Cool, yeah?!

Paint Splatter continues to miss the mark a bit - I might add though, the skin highlighting might come in handy if you're not confident on that. It would actually be nice if they did other skin tones too...

Sure, there's a look at the new Cadian boxes (no new minis, just sets), Phil Kelly talks about how he games (!!), a look at a Yarrick novel and the usual stuff up the back of the issue including some orange Dark Eldar.
As far as going down in the annals of great issues, this is unlikely to, but if you're following the Astra Militarum, you may as well!
