The last few weeks have been wall-to-wall Astra Militarum, so this weeks White Dwarf was going to be interesting as there are no really big releases in the form of miniatures. What this issue concentrates on are two main themes; 1) The new Citadel Tools 2) Fixing the image of the Guard after the release of the recent Codex: Astra Militarum. I wrote about the Codex: Astra Militarum a few days ago having read it cover to cover and found it to be... well depressing if you ever wanted to field Imperial Guard. It seems as though others at Games Workshop must have read it and had the same thought - so here's the repair job. It's also an interesting issue for something quite big this month they left out. So, what is it? More after the jump... |
Citadel have been making tools for a while now and since a very bad first impression with a hobby knife that wouldn't stay locked - in fact had no locking mechanism at all - I have veered clear of their tools. This does look like a nice set, but it is incredibly pricey even when bought individually!
This article talks about the idea of combined arms, effectively where you get different specialist forces into one force and use their parts to make an invincible whole.
What is interesting is how they use the very old imagery from the original Imperial Guard plastic miniatures box to talk about how the Imperial Guard are so grand and important - something that definitely did not come across in the Codex: Astra Militarum.
(If you want to hear the full but thankfully edited rant about this - go here)
Also written by Adam Troke (probably as close as White Dwarf get to a Beardy these days) Andy Clarke (the guy behind that Codex) and Simon Grant, we see a much more rounded image of the Guard.
Sure we get the word "beleaguered" from Clarke (surprise surprise) but the feeling is a combined force of armour and lots of infantry sees the Guard being the mighty force they can be.
It doesn't surprise me to see this kind of article, especially seeing veteran GW gamers would have read and used the new Codex: Astra Militarum by now. They would be as eager to fix the problems with it as much as any one.
Sprues and Glue takes you through the new Citadel Tool Set. I suppose this is interesting. That knife looks a bit crappy to me. At least it has a better handle. | Don't faint, but Paint Splatter this week is actually kind of useful. I haven't used the Texture Paints yet, so this article was quite informative. There's so many paints - how else can we know? |
There's also a piece on the Storm of Vengeance game and an interesting question posed by Dan Harden - does kitting up your Imperial Guard force (as advised in the Hammer of the Emperor article work, or is it best to just throw lots of units at your enemy?
There's also this cool alternate colour scheme on a Vostroyan. Nice!
So overall it was a pretty nothing issue.
There wasn't much said apart from trying to rescue the Imperial Guard from the Codex: Astra Militarum and some new tools.
You know they could be more exciting with their writing! It could be more dynamic, more passionate - it's just a bit ordinary.
Anyway, should you buy this issue?
Not really, no!
So what do you think about the repair job they're trying to do post-Codex: Astra Militarum?
